Kanye West’s ‘Grammy-Worn’ Nike Air Yeezy 1 Prototype Sells For $1.8 Million
Widely regarded as the rarest Yeezy sneaker ever, has sold for $1.8 million at Sotheby’s, making it the most expensive sneaker of all time.
Worn by Kanye during his performances of ‘Hey Mama’ and ‘Stronger’ at the 2008 Grammy Awards, the ‘Prototype’ introduced Nike’s prospective Air Yeezy project to the sneaker world.
Lighting the spark for Kanye’s trailblazing footwear empire, the sneaker comes in a size 12, and was created in Nike’s ‘Innovation Kitchen’ in Oregon. Designed by Kanye and Mark Smith, the sneaker features a soft black leather upper with perforated detailing, a tonal Swoosh logo on the overlay, and the familiar forefoot strap seen on all Air Yeezy models. Additionally, there’s ‘Y’ medallion lace locks done in bright pink, as well as a seriously boujee custom-lasered wooden box designed and etched by Smith.
The uber-expensive pair was sold to RARES, a platform specialising in fractional ownership of collectible goods, namely sneakers.
‘We are thrilled to work with Sotheby’s on this acquisition. Our goal in purchasing such an iconic shoe – and a piece of history – is to increase accessibility and empower the communities that birthed sneaker culture with the tools to gain financial freedom through RARES,’ said Gerome Sapp, RARES’ CEO and co-founder.
‘We look forward to working with Sotheby’s to continue to identify rare finds that will help elevate, preserve and uphold sneaker culture.’
