Jaylen Brown Breaks Down the Formula for His 741 Performance Brand
As an NBA superstar who’s fascinated with science and space, Jaylen Brown’s on-court performance is out of this world. The 2026 NBA Playoffs kicked off on April 18, and Brown has led the Boston Celtics to a 56–26 record this season – earning them a spot as the No 2. seed in the Eastern Conference.
Throughout all his MVP-worthy displays of skills on the hardwood, he’s been rocking the 741 Rover, which is the first silhouette from his independent performance brand, 741. The most recent release is the ‘Atomic Pack’, sporting ‘Green Electron’ and ‘Pink Proton’ colourways that embody hard work and faith respectively. It’s a continuation of the sci-fi universe he’s created, inviting fans to ‘Choose Your Energy’, as they follow a path of self-determination, exploration, and ownership.
We caught up with Jaylen to talk everything that’s been going on, from what inspired him to create his own brand to how he envisions 741 shaping the future of basketball.
Only a select few athletes have launched their own footwear brand. What inspired you to step out of the box and start 741?
At the time, what I was seeking in a footwear partner was not viewed as an amicable business model based on traditional athlete brand deal structures. Fair equity, creative direction, and marketing input were often pre-determined, whereas I believe athletes should be in the rooms where these things get brainstormed and negotiated on.
Not only did I create 741 as a solution to such, I also created 741 to become a representation of creating your own path, uncompromised, and encouraging other creatives, especially athletes, to either do the same or advocate for better, more inclusive, deals.
What’s the symbolism behind the 741 name?
Numbers are the language of math and science. So, I wanted my brand to become a representation of that frequency. The 7 represents divine energy and completion, the 4 represents stability and foundation, and the 1 represents new beginnings. Together, 741 is also a healing frequency I often played before big games.
You’ve had a fascination for science and space since your childhood, which is clearly seen in the 741 Rover and its colourway names. What was the thought process behind incorporating that into your brand?
More than anything, I’m fascinated with the literal world building of science in itself. Sci-fi is a means of understanding science and philosophy on a futuristic and visual scale. So, before I envisioned 741, I first envisioned what the world of the future of performance looked like, and then I created 741 products, brand mission, campaign visuals, and overall aesthetics to materialise that world for myself and others alike.
What steps did you take to get 741 started from the ground up?
Everything starts with curiosity. After curiosity, comes intense research, including meeting and consulting with successful designers and gurus in the space. Following research comes consistent and frequent testing. Finally, formalising a team to execute the vision.
As the Founder of 741, how involved are you in the production cycle from start to finish?
I’m involved in every step of the process, intentionally so. This isn’t something I put my name on from a distance. Ownership means responsibility, and for me, that shows up in the details. From early conception to material selection, from shaping the story behind a colourway to how it’s introduced to the world, I’m hands-on.
Every design, every campaign, every release is an extension of how I see the future of performance. So I take the time to sit with it, question it, refine it. I’m in the room with the designers, I’m pushing ideas, I’m making sure that what we put out isn’t just product, it’s perspective.
I turned down opportunities because I wanted full creative control, and with that comes a standard. I can’t be halfway involved in something I fully own. So from start to finish, I’m tapped in, because 741 isn’t just a brand, it’s a vision I’m building in real time.
On-court performance is a priority for you. How much testing goes into production and do you feel that you’re able to better adjust your shoes to your needs being that you have full control of the brand?
Because I exclusively wear the exact same product we sell on the market, I’m constantly testing the shoes in real time; paying attention to how they feel, respond, and hold up in different moments on the court. That testing actually starts way earlier though.
During development and manufacturing, we’re already putting the shoes through performance and durability testing. Then I take it a step further by wearing early samples in workouts and runs to dial in fit, comfort, and responsiveness before anything goes to market. The difference with 741 is I have full control, so I can take that feedback and immediately make adjustments… no delay, no layers.
And for me, that matters because there’s no separation between what I wear and what the consumer gets. It’s the same shoe, built to perform at the highest level.
You’ve talked of being inspired by Kobe Bryant to launch your own brand and how he wanted to sign his own athletes. Are you looking to take a similar approach with 741?
Kobe was a huge inspiration for launching 741. In the near future, we are not only looking to sign athletes, we are also looking to sign talented creatives, designers, and thinkers. Performance comes in all forms, not just athletic.
You revealed a 3D-printed silhouette in collaboration with Zellerfeld a couple of months ago. Is that the next step in design at 741?
741 is always looking ten steps into the future. And, with what Zellerfeld has been able to evolve in the 3D printing space, the exploration of a competitive 3D-printed basketball shoe becomes an exciting venture for both companies. We are in the testing phase of our hypothesis, and the results have been inspiring.
Futurism is rooted in 741’s brand ideology. How do you see the brand helping shape the future of basketball?
On the surface level, I have already seen the spark that 741 has made into the world of basketball: you can do it yourself. It’s important to have representation of paths you can take in life, encouraging future generations to weigh in on which genuinely suits their vision and maximises their values the best.
Beyond that, with the future product and community projects we have planned, 741 aims to highlight and cultivate the next generation of athletes who value hard work, consistency, and giving back to their community, as well as to engineer products that enhance performance both on and off of the court/field.
