London Calling! On’s LightSpray™ Tour Rolls Into the Capital
When On debuted LightSpray™ in 2024, it felt as if we’d have to wait decades before the technology was available commercially. The concept was so wild – how could they roll out these sprayed-on uppers en masse? Well, never underestimate the burgeoning Swiss brand, because in April of 2025 the LightSpray™-based Cloudboom Strike launched to the public.
Today, On’s LightSpray™ offerings are available to runners in the form of the Cloudmonster 3 Hyper and Cloudboom Strike, but On haven’t stopped there. In February of this year, the brand announced a brand new LightSpray™ factory in South Korea, setting the tech on a course for world domination. The next stop for On’s LightSpray™ is London, where they’ll hold an immersive experience for the first time in the United Kingdom starting on April 24. And the best part? You can be a part of it!
What is On LightSpray™?
On's LightSpray™ technology premiered as a groundbreaking method for creating lightweight, aerodynamic uppers for performance footwear. Developed internally at On Labs in Zurich, the technology was already proving its worth well before its July 2024 public announcement, with On athletes like Kenyan runner Hellen Obiri winning races in development versions as early as April that year.
LightSpray™ is manufactured using an automated robot arm that sprays recycled thermoplastic material onto a last, resulting in a one-piece upper. Ultra-thin, lightweight and sock-like, the LightSpray™-constructed upper is then connected to On’s patented midsole units without using any glue. Instead, On utilise a thermal fusing technology – reducing the overall materials used, and ultimately cutting the weight of the finished product. The entire manufacturing process takes only three minutes, a phenomenal reduction in operation time compared to traditional performance shoe creation, which can take multiple days.
In addition to reducing the weight of their performance offerings, On’s tech slashes carbon emissions, with LightSpray™ shoe production generating 75 per cent less emissions than the brand’s other running silhouettes.
Currently, there are two silhouettes constructed using LightSpray™: the Cloudboom Strike and Cloudmonster 3 Hyper. The former is On’s race offering, prioritising speed with a curved carbon fibre Speedboard and weighing just 170 grams. Down below, Helion HF hyper foam brings maximum cushioning, along with On’s famous CloudTec for supreme transitions. The other end of the LightSpray™ spectrum delivers the Cloudmonster 3 Hyper, a trainer built for long and tempo runs. Built to be exceptionally responsive, the model rocks Helion HF foam to keep your legs in peak condition and CloudTec cushioning for excellent energy return – ultimately weighing in at 205 grams.
What’s This About London?
Kicking off on April 24 at 3 Hanover Square in London, a dedicated space will open to the public to serve as an evolution of On Labs – the brand’s innovative hubs that have traveled to cultural nuclei like Tokyo, Berlin and Paris. The London LightSpray™ chapter will hold immersive installations, workshops and activations, just in time for the marathon.
Visitors to the space will have the opportunity to discover the details of LightSpray™ tech’s development journey, from sketchbook concept to technological juggernaut. Central to the installation is the LightSpray™ robot, which can be witnessed in action as it displays its game-changing manufacturing functions.
How Can I Get Involved?
There’s no barrier to entry for On’s LightSpray™ London Residency – anyone can take part!
Between April 24 and 26, the space will be open from 11 AM to 7 PM at 3 Hanover Square in London, so you can just drop by. That’s not all: plenty of On-hosted events will go down over the weekend, including runs, workshops and recovery lounges.
