Right on the heels of Steph Curry and Under Armour announcing the end of their 13-year partnership, the sneaker free agent took the court in the Nike Kobe 6 ‘Mambacita’. While he only broke out the sentimental pair for the pre-game warm-up, this was the first time seeing him rock the Swoosh on-foot since 2013.

Curry first signed on the dotted line with Nike back when he was drafted to the Golden State Warriors in 2009, but that contract came to a close just four years later. Botched presentations and unattractive offers led him straight into the arms of Under Armour, which took the brand to astronomical heights within the basketball business. The UA stage of his career is no longer, but fans shouldn’t be quick to assume that he’s dribbling back to Oregon.

In response to a question about his footwear choice before playing the San Antonio Spurs, Curry revealed the motivation for his decision. ‘That specific pair, it speaks for itself what it means,’ he said. ‘I wanted to take advantage of that moment and pay tribute, and I think it gave me some good energy tonight.’ Given Bryant and Curry’s mutual admiration – and the fact the ‘Mambacita’ edition honours the late Gigi Bryant – it’s understandable why he picked these for his first night going solo.

Will the Chef end up cooking in Nike’s Innovation Kitchen, or will he continue splashing down three-pointers with another brand? Only time will lift that curtain, but rest assured all eyes are glued to his on-court kicks for now.
