The Predator Touch Is Back, and It's 1996 All Over Again
Spotted on Jürgen Klopp's feet during his opening training sessions as Germany's new Bundestrainer, the returning Predator Touch has now been officially unveiled by adidas.
Released in 1996, the boot remains one of football's most iconic designs, distinguished by its foreboding rubber fins, ostensibly engineered to improve control and generate swerve on the ball. Famously, it was immortalised that August when David Beckham scored for Manchester United from the against Wimbledon, igniting his reputation as one of European football’s finest young talents. (A curious footnote to the story is that his pair had actually been made for Rangers midfielder Charlie Miller, with Beckham getting his hands on them because they were the only ones available in his size.)
Revived as part of adidas’ Made in Germany series, the updated version stays close to its predecessor, retaining the signature fins and legendary fold-over tongue – a feature that would become synonymous with the Predator series. The leather upper is carried over from the original, while a Predator 26 soleplate brings the boot into the modern era.
With so much of football's current aesthetic filtered through nostalgia, it's not always easy to get excited about another retro design. But these are pure catnip for anyone who grew up in the UK during that period, capturing a moment when Cool Britannia was in full swing, from the optimism surrounding New Labour to Kate Moss, Oasis and, of course, Becks himself. In other words, we’re here for it!
Whether they will be rolled out on the feet of adidas athletes in official games remains to be seen (are the fins actually practical?!), but imagine how good someone like Jude Bellingham would look cracking in a winner in them?
