Is Mizuno's 96g Racer the Future of Running Shoe Design?
Are running shoes now officially entering their candy floss upper era? Mizuno seem to indicate yes, as the Japanese label gears up for the release of the Hyperwarp 96, the lightest carbon-plated racer ever.
As the name suggests, the supershoe weighs in at a bonkers 96 grams, making it a single gram lighter than adidas’ all-conquering Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3. Developed through a revamped testing process that allows new prototypes to be produced within 48 hours of receiving tester feedback, the shoe also introduces an all-new Enerzy XP+ foam, with a 39mm stack at the heel and 36mm at the forefoot.
But the real talking point is that spray-on, gossamer-like upper. Dubbed the Dual Skin Upper, the TPU construction immediately brings On’s LightSpray technology to mind, albeit with a slightly more textured finish. Like the Cloudboom Strike LS, it also does away with laces entirely.
The shoe’s individual serial number is printed on the reverse of the midsole. Along with a fuzzy, deconstructed collar, it adds to the prototype-esque aesthetic, communicating that, yes, this thing is a serious bit of kit.
The fact that Mizuno have even provided a step-by-step guide on how to get into the shoe, warning wearers to be careful not to damage the material with their fingernails, tells you everything you need to know. Forget everyday beaters designed to withstand punishing training miles. This beast is all about pure speed.
With only 696 pairs releasing and priced at $600, the Hyperwarp 96 is hardly likely to become a fixture at Saturday morning parkruns. But, like the aforementioned Cloudboom Strike LS, its radical design language raises the question of whether this could represent the future of running footwear – one where aesthetics are dictated by performance engineering rather than conventional design cues. It also marks a major milestone for Mizuno, firmly establishing the Japanese brand as a member of the exclusive sub-100g club.
