Back With a Bang: Nike Kobe 8 Protro ‘Shanghai Fireworks’
Nike are reaching back into the vaunted Kobe archive to revive one of the most explosive colourways of the Mamba era, with the Kobe 8 Protro ‘Shanghai Fireworks’ – slated to land during Holiday 2026. According to and , the long-rumoured Protro edition is finally on the way.
First released in 2013 as a China exclusive, the ‘Shanghai Fireworks’ Kobe 8 instantly stood apart from the pack. Where a lot of performance basketball shoes of the era leaned conservative, this one went full spectacle – wrapping the lightweight mesh upper in a riot of 'Laser Orange', 'Cinnabar Red', and 'Safety Orange' tones that mirrored the chaos and colour of a fireworks display lighting up the night sky.

More than a decade later, Nike are finally giving the wider world a crack at the cult classic, this time in Protro form. That means the visual DNA of the original remains intact, but underfoot you can expect modern upgrades aimed at today’s game – improved cushioning, refined responsiveness and updated tooling designed to meet the standards of contemporary performance basketball.
Black Swooshes and heel branding cut through the fiery upper, anchoring the design and keeping things recognisably Kobe. It’s a colourway that still feels as wild now as it did in 2013 – and that’s exactly the point.
With a projected retail price of around $200, the Kobe 8 Protro ‘Shanghai Fireworks’ is shaping up as one of the headline Kobe drops of 2026, blending deep-cut nostalgia with court-ready tech in a way only a true Protro can.
