Update February 2, 2022: After images appeared almost six months ago, the Nike Air Force 1 Mid 'Flax' is finally primed for a hard release date on February 5.

Nike have included the ‘Flax’ Air Force 1 as a seasonal staple for years. Coming in all three low, mid and high cut forms, it’s a near-certainty to see it on shelves come the colder seasons. This year the mid version will be coming back, in addition to the rumoured Supreme collaboration.

The ‘Flax’ colourway is a pretty overt reference to a popular wheat-coloured work boot that’s become an icon of the footwear world, especially in New York. However, Nike’s take on blue-collar aesthetics works pretty well on their accessible AF-1 icon by following the same design conventions as its inspiration.

For one, all-over nubuck uppers are a supple and comfortable alternative to the usual smooth leather, especially considering this has a taller ankle and fixed strap. Round boot-style laces are easier to handle, but may need firmer tightening – thankfully, the metal top eyelet can deal with the extra tension. The lining looks like a softer brushed variety too, as opposed to the regular mesh. Of course, the midsoles are entirely gum rubber.

However, this latest release isn’t just a remake of previous years’ releases. It appears the main Swoosh branding is tonal, but is finished in smooth leather rather than nubuck.

Keep an eye out for the Nike Air Force 1 Mid ‘Flax’ to release in coming weeks.
